More then a few times I've had to uninstall/re-install and/or downgrade GIMP.įor free software GIMP is decent and CAN do some amazing work - IF one spends the time learning its clunky nature. I've also run into issues where GIMP will just shit the bed and importers will stop working when it was JUST working. I generally find PS easier to just get things done. The biggest problem for me is that GIMP still doesn't natively support all of the PS Layer FX. GIMP has finally caught up and even surpassed PS now IIRC with the number of different layer blends. More on this in a minute.įor the longest time GIMP had less layer blends then PS. ![]() Every few years GIMP gets closer and closer to rendering correctly - just not there yet. The problem is that I have a PSD created back in ~2005 with PS CS2 and GIMP still can't render it correctly. I made this Starcraft 2 cheat sheet with it so it can do some really nice effects - if one digs. I myself tried to use svgs in Unity, but i had to use completely different components than pngs and the finished look was exactly the same. As far as i know svgs in game design are not very frequently used. Doesnt need to be 4k but really just something high so it doesnt look blurry (4k is good for scaling when actually publishing a project). The more exercises you do and the more time you spend learning about the tools the better you will be and the closer you will be to the things that you want to achieve.įor the other question. I am also behind the saying my dad always used to say "A human learns through time". I dont know any good tutorials but i remember that when i wanted to try out my skills i just pulled up random tutorials on how to achieve certain effects (sometimes even watched illustrator tutorials just to spite adobe). Its the type of tool that is best learnt by just doing what you have to do and googling specific things. Im kind of baiased because ive been using inkscape since about when i was 7 years old and proffesionally for the past 2-3 years. Where are the Adobe products on Linux? Some people want to support companies that are OS agnostic. Lastly, some people actually use different Operating Systems. On Adobe's pricing you know the problem is not just a small one anymore. When even Linus of LinusTechTips comments But Adobe is doing a good job of ticking people off with their prices. If Affinity can sell Affinity Photo for a one-time price of $55 why can't Adobe? Answer: Greed.Īs a game dev I get that it costs money to support and add new features for software. Hence I use:īecause I'm tired of being nickeled and dimed. I would pay $299 for CS22 and use that 5-10 years but I can't. The third problem is that Adobe doesn't give us that choice. Some people prefer to pay ONCE for a software and use that version until there are sufficient upgrades that make it worth paying for again. Who knows when or how much the next price increase will happen? In 2019 the price for CC went from $39.99/month to $48.99. Five years later the price doubled to $19.99. When it originally rolled out at $9.99/month in 2013 this was a concern. The second problem is that Adobe can jack the price up anytime. If you get outside of your myopic bubble and actually listen to photographers you would actually learn about problems that others face. Not everyone agrees or likes being nickeled and dimed on what is essentially renting software. ![]() Not CS 4.0 but version 4.0 when they added PNG support.
